| We Are American BaptistsA People of Faith. A People of Mission. As a denomination, the American Baptist Churches of the USA is unique in that it exists to offer guidance and support, but does not interfere with the autonomy of the local church. We are a denomination of individual entities, tied together by common distinctives, mission, and ministry. Some key distinctives that American Baptist Churches typically have in common: · No Creed. Baptists have never formulated or ascribed to any of the traditional creeds. Their basic creed, if any, is the teachings of the New Testament as a guide for faith and practice. Faith Fellowship has developed a formal statement of faith by which decisions are made concerning church governance, but individual believers are not required to adhere to the statement. · Priesthood of all believers. Individual believers are responsible for their own commitment of faith for salvation. · Regenerate church membership. Membership is confined to those who have personally placed their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. · Immersion. Our primary mode of baptism is complete immersion of the candidate in water. This is an outward sign of inward grace. · Congregational form of government. Church membership is ultimately responsible for all decisions of the Body. · Separation of church and state. Although the church works with the state in all those things which are neutral and necessary for the existence of the church as a corporation, it does believe that the fundamental powers and rights of the two different entities should be kept separate. · Freedom of conscience. Baptists believe that every person is entitled to freedom to worship God as their conscience directs.
